The Story of Bluebell Love
Hello there! I’m Liz, the person behind Bluebell Love, and this is Bessie, the Studio Supervisor.
I love colour and creativity, bringing my fun, nature-inspired designs to life from my cosy garden studio on Dartmoor, Devon.
I use a combination of screen printing, block printing and freehand painting, and modern digital printing techniques to bring my unique fabric designs to life.
Where it all started
I started Bluebell Love in 2015 (which seems like a distant memory now) and began by creating my own fabrics through block printing. Being self-taught, I experimented with carving lino blocks and designed my first fabric print featuring cute bees and flowers in a pretty colour combo of yellow, grey, and blue. And just like that, Bluebell Love was born. Lavender bags, inspired by my love for lavender, were the first products I created. Initially, I used lavender from my own garden, but as Bluebell Love grew, I couldn’t keep up with drying it myself, so now I source my lavender from a farm in the UK.
Different ways of making fabric
As my fascination and passion for creating my own fabric designs grew, I started experimenting with screen printing. I have since replaced many of my tired blocks with screens, and now the majority of my hand-printed fabrics are screen printed. However, I still add many small details, like the beaks on birds, by block printing.
Going Digital
I've always seen myself as a pencil-and-paper kind of gal, drawing and designing all of my fabric prints by hand onto tracing paper. However, a couple of years ago, I ventured into the digital drawing world. Since then, I haven’t looked back. Digital drawing has made designing fabric prints easier, allowing me to make small adjustments, tweaks, and multiple versions before settling on a final design.
After creating a design, I print it out to scale and create the screens for screen printing. But as my digital drawings developed, I found it harder to simplify them and reduce the number of colours. So, I decided to send my drawings to a fabric printer in the UK, who digitally prints my designs onto cotton. In 2024, I launched my first digitally printed fabric and products.
The Embroidery Story
I can't remember exactly when I started embroidery, but I began with cross-stitch. My husband calls it ‘angry stitching’ because I often got frustrated with the counting and getting lost with the chart. I always stitch while watching TV, so following a chart wasn’t fully relaxing for me. At some point, I tried embroidery and loved the freedom it offered. I could focus on the stitching rather than counting, and the variety of stitches was amazing. There are so many types, and they can look so different by changing the number of strands, twists, or stitching with multiple colours at once. It’s a wonderful world of creativity and colour.
I've never been one for sticking to a pattern, so with every embroidery project, I often choose a different colour palette and switch up the stitches. For fun, I decided to print one of my lavender bag designs in grey so I could embroider over it. I chose my beach hut design and had so much fun stitching the multicoloured stripes and adding a little seagull to one of the huts. It was a joy to bring my 2D print to life with colours and textures.
Knowing that many embroidery enthusiasts have beautiful thread selections, I tested the waters to see if others would like to colour in my designs with thread. That’s how embroidery became a part of Bluebell Love. It was inevitable that these two great loves—my fabric business and embroidery—would collide.
In recent years, the embroidery side of my business has grown significantly with the development of full kits. This growth has given focus to my hand-printed products, which are now designed to bring joy, relaxation, and a touch of whimsy to your crafting experience.
Whether you're a seasoned embroiderer or just starting your journey, my range of embroidery kits, starter sets, and thread sets are designed to inspire and guide you. Each kit comes with everything you need to create beautiful, handcrafted items that you'll be proud to show off or gift to loved ones.
